The MakerPlace

Presented by the Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana and the Kentucky Science Center

We’ve got The MakerPlace! Based on the popular Maker Movement and the variety of makerspaces popping up in communities across the country, The MakerPlace brings science, technology, engineering and mathematics to life through designing, building, tinkering and inventing using ordinary, everyday items, gizmos, and gadgets.

MakerPlace participants (girls and boys grade 3 and up) will explore these concepts and bring home their own creations at the end of each themed session or after they complete a project.  There are three workshops to choose from Let’s Make a Thing Workshops, Open Meeting & Making, and Special Skill-Building Workshops. Cost for attendance varies based on session.

Please register through the Events Portal at the top of the page.

Open Meeting & Making

Join the maker movement!  We meet every other week to work on our own projects, meet and hang out with other makers, find inspiration, and learn new skills.  This meeting is open to the newly curious and seasoned makers alike.  Attendees are encouraged to bring any existing projects or new ideas to get access to the right tools, knowledge, and materials.  Don't have a project?  No problem.  Come and check out what's going on and we'll help you match your interests to a cool project you can work on at future meetings.  No formal lesson is planned, but we'll start with a short formal meeting and then get to work dreaming up and making cool things.  Open to girls and boys grade 3 and up.

Special Skill-Building Workshops

Want to take your DIY-attitude to the next level and cultivate your maker skills?  You came to the right place!  These workshops cover a more detailed understanding of key skills and subjects useful for hackers and makers.  Each workshop centers around a particular topic chosen based on community interest.  Like the Make a Thing Workshops, you will get to create something and take it home as part of the learning process.  Open to girls and boys grade 3 and up.

Workshop Information

Each girl and boy that attends the workshop will be exposed to many different media:  textiles, wood working, electrical circuitry, joining, cutting, laser cutting, soldering, programming, 3-D plotting, and much more!  They’ll learn how these different media can be combined to create one-of-a-kind projects.

Adults are there to work alongside the youth, not to be full participants in the workshop.  They will not be making their own projects, but assisting the youth and being exposed to the maker movement and the many different media.
