Reports show that approximately 2 million of Kentucky’s 25 million total acres of land has the potential to be reforested. To that end, Energy and Environment Cabinet Secretary Len Peters recently proposed a long-term reforestation project on both public and private lands throughout the Commonwealth that are deemed suitable and available. The project initially utilizes Kentucky’s Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts to assist with the planting of bare root tree seedlings produced by the Kentucky Division of Forestry. The goal for this project is to plant 1 million seedlings per year for twenty years, making it currently the most ambitious tree planting project of its kind in the nation. The project has been branded “Kentucky’s 20/20 Vision for Reforestation...20 Million Seedlings In 20 Years”.

There are a number of opportunities available for Girl Scouts to participate. We have already planted 500 trees and have another 100 trees being planted by the Murray State College Scouts April 5 and more plantings at Camps Shantituck & Pennyroyal.
